Narrative Theory
Starter- What is a narrative?
A narrative is a storyline with different elements which engrosses
audience to consume media context. (In books, films etc.)
Needs characters and different roles
Needs to be entertaining for that genre
Needs a plot
To create a
story, structure is needed
Horror film
example –
- Starts with normality, two kids walking around and come across an abandoned house
- Kids both go look around the house and get locked in by mysterious figure
- One of the kids try to get out the house threw a window, glass cuts one of the kids arm off
- One uses Ouija board to talk to the ghost and get out the house
- Both leave the house not feeling the same way as before but try to get back into a normal state like before
Narrative gives meaning and structure for audiences to
compare their own circumstances to those of characters making them feel a
number of different emotions which is what audiences desire from media texts
